By all accounts, Forrest Robert Spitler was a “late bloomer.” Though he knew a great deal about many things, he experienced difficulty finding employment because he didn’t have a high school diploma. Then, at the age of 38, he realized that earning his GED might be the answer.
When Forrest received his GED Test results, he had scored in the top one-percent of all GED testers in the United States, and consequently, the doors to employment swung wide open.
On Oct. 31, 2015, the Inn at Warner Hall is pleased to invite you to participate in the Forrest Robert Spitler Memorial 5k Run/Walk as a way to pay homage to “Bobby” and to his fellow “late bloomers” who recognize their great potential and ability to share skills and knowledge with their community.
Proceeds of the race will benefit the Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc., a community-based literacy organization that provides free instructional services to increase literacy skills, math skills or to prepare for GED tests. In 2013-2014, the organization assisted 58 students over the course of 6,200 volunteer hours.
The 5k Run/Walk will take place on the grounds of Warner Hall from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and will include a “Kids Fun Run” from 8:30 to 9 a.m.
Because the race is on Halloween, costumes are encouraged and will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons for the best costumes.
The entry fee is $30 until Aug. 31, and will increase to $35 from Sept. 1 through race day.
To register, send your registration to Adult Literacy on the Middle Peninsula, Inc. P.O. Box 1992, Gloucester, Va., 23061 or register online at www.almpva.org.
