Phillips Energy and Harris Garage Raising Funds For The Samaritan Group On #GivingTuesday, Dec. 2

GLOUCESTER, Va. – Phillips Energy, Inc. has joined #GivingTuesday – a first of its kind effort that encourages charities, families, businesses, individuals to follow the post-Thanksgiving shopping blitz with efforts to help local communities. This year Phillips Energy will support The Samaritan Group.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, just after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Phillips Energy will donate 10 percent of retail sales, including fuel sold at the station near Gloucester Point, to The Samaritan Group.

“Phillips Energy has much to be thankful for and while we work hard to give back to our community all year long, we’re honored to participate in #GivingTuesday for the second year in a row,” said Phillips Energy Vice President Elizabeth McCormick. “#GivingTuesday gives us an opportunity to take that giving spirit and spread it a little further by helping people in our community who need it most.”

Phillips Energy’s #GivingTuesday efforts in 2013 helped raise more than $1000 for the Bread for Life Community Food Pantry.

“We’d love to see even more businesses get involved in the #GivingTuesday effort this year and really spread it across the community,” McCormick said.

Harris Garage, located near the Phillips Energy Gloucester location near the Coleman Bridge has also announced it will donate 10 percent of all sales and service on Dec. 2 to The Samaritan Group.

The Samaritan Group provides funds for Gloucester families seeking temporary financial assistance. They have provided nearly $700,000 to almost 2,000 families since it was organized in 1991 by citizens and business leaders.

The Samaritan Group is funded by fundraisers like this, United Way designations, churches, civic groups, memorials and The Daily Press Holiday Fund.
The Samaritan Group also supports the following:
• The JD Briggs Children’s Fund where The Samaritan Group provides funds to support children in the Gloucester Public School System with needs such as clothing, medical and school supplies and field trip fees.
• Three Rivers Healthy Families. These funds help support needy families who face health impairments because of pre-mature birth and lack adequate housing, educational or medical resources.
• The Family Room. Ware Episcopal Church operates a community service by providing a social network for preschool age children, their parents and caregivers.
• Habitat for Humanity. Donations of time and money are used to assist low-income families to become homeowners.
• Vehicle Donation. The Samaritan Group also works to help those citizens who are in need of basic transportation. We partner with individuals who wish to donate automobiles in need of minor repair. Michael Harris, owner of Harris Garage, inspects and restores the vehicle to safe running condition. Safe and reliable transportation is a big need in Gloucester. The blue book value of donated vehicles is tax deductible.
