Ware Academy is pleased to share an opportunity with the public. This presentation is free and open to students and adults alike.
Mosaic Steel explores the history of steel drums from its French and English plantation beginnings in Trinidad and Tobago. From its African and Island inventors, came a long and traditional musical richness that developed into idiophones, or non-membrane drums, shaped to create pitches out of 55-gallon oil drums. These instruments have been celebrated and experimented on with musical innovation, call and response, slave insurrection, and modern musical interpretations. Students will gain a rich understanding of the survival of people, the multi-cultural unity, and the need for the arts to rise above all human emotion.
